Security From The Inside Out

I had a thought this morning in the midst of survival mode that the feeling of security is often sought outside of us.  Stocks are called securities.  Anyone who suffered great loss during the depression or the internet bubble would no longer believe stocks or bonds provide lasting security.  Anyone affected by the economic downturn around 2008 would certainly not say one’s security is their home since many ended up homeless.

It is said that we each come into and exit this world alone.  While a baby or departing loved one may not be physically alone in the delivery room or a hospice room, the actual birth or death is only experienced by the individual arriving or exiting this thing called life.

In God We Trust was printed on the currency of the United States by our very wise forefathers and founders.  Here are some questions for you to ponder from your own heart and soul.  Please take some time to really think about this exercise.  If you don’t have time right now, please revisit later when you do.

▪       Do you believe in God?

▪       If yes, what does God – the actual essence of God, mean, look or feel like to you?

▪       If you don’t believe in God or a Higher Power, why not?  What do you believe in?

▪       Regardless of your answers above, in what do you trust?

▪       In whom do you trust?

▪       Do you trust yourself?  Regardless of your answer, why?

Your age and life experiences will play a huge factor in your answers above.  However deeply ingrained your religious affiliation and beliefs are in you and your family will most likely influence your answers as well.

Let go and let God is another popular saying.  I read a Facebook post one time that wisely said it is difficult to let go until you forgive – including yourself.  Forgiveness, I believe, was the heart of what Jesus taught.  His last words were, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.”

In the movie Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps, Michael Douglas’ character Gordon Gekko tells his daughter that “You have to forgive.  People are a mixed bag.”

The wounds you and every other person have not yet healed are stored as memories in the unconscious mind.  The job of the unconscious mind is to protect you from what you consciously or unconsciously believe to be harmful to you or sometimes others.  It doesn’t have to be true for anyone else; it just has to be true for you.  You may have adopted that unconscious belief as a child, taken it on from a relative or life experience or brought it with you to heal from another lifetime.  As Carl Jung said, “When an inner situation is not made conscious, it appears outside as fate.”

I believe we each have a great destiny – whatever that means to each and every one of us.  Your destiny may be to be a great and loving Mom.  It may be to help change the world in a positive way through a book you write or donations you make.  Every destiny is as unique as every person.  No two are alike – just different.  So why do we always compare ourselves to others and so often come up lacking or better than?

An Old Cherokee Legend about Two Wolves states we have a choice between fear and love.  Having grown up in the Catholic tradition I was taught something similar; that there is an Angel whispering in one ear and the devil in the other ear always vying for my attention.

The truth is that here on Earth we have emotions of manipulation that are used by all of us.  They are used to distract ourselves and others in order to feel safe and not move forward as who we truly are meant to be to achieve our destiny.  Emotions of manipulation are used to keep ourselves and others stuck or easily controlled through fear and feelings of lack – so we can feel “safe.”

It is time to see, feel and live beyond externally contrived limitations and connect with your soul.  This is essential if you prefer to achieve your destiny rather than succumb to your fate.

What does living your destiny rather than settling for fate mean to you?

Nelson Mandela is a fabulous example of a soul who stayed connected to his destiny through great long-term adversity.  In the movie Invictus directed by Clint Eastwood, Mr. Mandela was said to recite every night certain lines from the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley as follows:

“…I thank whatever Gods may be
for my unconquerable soul…

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.”

I believe a true sense of security comes from our connection to God through our individual soul.  Each and every soul and animal is God as an individualized being.  The breath is our direct connection to our soul.  Breathe deeply and feel security from the inside out.  Do what you must do in the world of action steps with intelligence and common sense, but keep your connection to God (if you believe) and your soul with faith, joy and gratitude.  You are a spark of God’s greatness like no other.  Rejoice and be free.

To your grace-filled destiny.

P.S.  Every time I write or hear the line “do you believe,” I think of little Drew Barrymore in the film E.T. saying to her Mom in the film who is reading a children’s story to her “I believe! I believe!”  Children remember their connection unless it’s coaxed out of them.  Call forth the child in you and live in joy.

Kick Your Stress to the Curb Peacefully

When you are stressed about something, you are most likely upset in some way.  You may be fearful of something happening or not happening.  It could be caused by anything.  Research tells us that 80% of illness is caused by stress.

So how do you calm your stress?  Is your method health enhancing or will it cause problems for you or your life?

I’ve struggled with a sugar addiction in some form all my life.  Addiction starts out as fun, an experiment or a way to redirect your focus to delay dealing with what is going on inside or outside of you.  Eating too much or unhealthy foods always felt like a hug to me since my family used food as love as many families do.

Rather than deal with the root cause of that which drives you to eat when you are not physically hungry or whatever your escape tactic may be such as television, it becomes a habit to shove the angst down or set it aside rather than sit with it and move through it.  I’ve heard it said many times that the quickest way beyond something is through it.

People fear pain.  People fear change because they think change can bring pain.  However, change can also just happen to shake up your comfort zone to get you to grow into the goal you or your Soul have set for yourself.  Pushing the boundaries of a comfort zone can cause any number of responses or reactions.  Responses tend to be healthier and reactions tend to be automatic triggers inside you that “attack” to stay “safe.”

The breath is our connection to our Soul.  Our Soul is our connection to God.  We are all part of the same whole created by the One Creator – regardless of what name is given to the Source of all that exists.

When you, anyone or a whole group of people are stuck in fear, the first impulse is to react and protect.  Protection as a reaction can take on many forms.  It can show up as addictions or profiling or projecting things onto someone or others that may not be true.

A safer choice is to stop the mind from racing for a minute, get quiet and just breathe.  Feel centered and connect with your God inspired self.  Inspiration can then enter the door of your open mind and heart where it could not enter a closed mind and heart filled with fear or anger.  That is where compassion finds its way into your heart and into the world.  Compassion opens the door to understanding and forgiveness.

Most times, everything boils down to a choice between fear and love.  It starts with you, me and every person in the world.  I believe animals matter here also.  Isn’t it time we all started finding compassion and choose love?  This world is a collective enterprise.  You first contribute to the world with your feeling vibration.

How do you feel right now?

Check in with your breath whenever you feel stressed.  Stop to breathe before you blurt out something you may regret.  Stop to breathe before you shove down a dozen cookies, a few cocktails or buy something you don’t need.  You may still end up making the same choice, but you’ll hopefully be consciously responding after breathing rather than automatically reacting to numb the temporary pain you feel in the current moment.

Everything is temporary.  This too shall pass.  Stopping to breathe and check in allows grace to enter.
