How to Change a Habit

Have you ever heard “neurons that fire together wire together”?  Have you ever given any thought to what that really means; how it happens and how you can rewire them to serve your needs better?

Let’s cover those items one at a time.

1.  Neurons that fire together wire together.

All parts of the nervous system are based on the functions of neurons. Neurons are specialized cells that process information. The human brain has over 100 billion neurons. Neurons that fire together wire together. All nervous systems in all animal species have four basic types of neurons:

  • Sensory neurons: Tell the rest of the brain about the external and internal environment.
  • Motor (and other output) neurons: Motor neurons contract muscles and mediate behavior, and other output neurons stimulate glands and organs.
  • Communication neurons: Transmit signals from one brain area to another.
  • Computation neurons: The majority of neurons in vertebrates are computation neurons. Computation neurons extract and process information coming in from the senses, compare that information to what’s in memory, and use the information to plan and execute behavior.

Neurons Firing Together

The number of possible neuron connections is so large it cannot be counted.  That translates to no neuron connection limits in the human body which is one of the reasons athletes and others can break records and do the seemingly impossible.

2.  How do neurons wire together?

Neurons wire together when you think in a certain way or do an action in a certain way long enough to make it a habit. Every time you think something different or differently, different neurons fire up to make that happen. Every time you do something different or differently, different neurons fire up to make that happen. Being wired together means it becomes an unconscious activity; meaning you think those thoughts or do those things without consciously thinking. Think about brushing your teeth. Is that a habituated action for you? If it is, then neurons have wired together so you can essentially brush your teeth without thinking about it. There are pros and cons to the wiring of neurons.

If it’s a good habit that serves your wellbeing and frees up your energy to do more important tasks, it’s a wonderful thing that neurons have wired together to habituate that action. If it’s turning to sugar or unhealthy foods every time you’re bored or stressed, that is not a beneficially wired neuron connection.

That which is unconscious runs under your radar. You don’t tend to pay attention to them or whether or not they still serve you. As your goals and life change over time, some habits may need to change – especially as they affect your health and wellbeing.

That which becomes unconscious fools you into thinking that is just how things are; that is just how you are.

Memes, or collective beliefs, are another example of neurons wired together from a collective perspective. Memes can be more difficult to rewire, but not impossible.

3.  How can you rewire neuron connections to serve your needs better?

The first step to rewire your neurons and essentially change the habits you want to change is to notice them. Since they may be unconscious, you may wish to ask those close to you to notice and let you know in a kind and loving way those habits that may not serve you well. Keep in mind they may have their own unconscious reasons for pointing them out to you, so you will have to decide if that is something you wish to change about yourself.

After you notice them and decide you want to make changes, decide what change you want to make and build a plan. Changing habits takes a minimum of a consistent 21 to 90 days depending on the person and how long that habit has been ingrained in your unconscious mind and lifestyle.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Albert Einstein

For example, let’s say you want to loose some weight and improve your health.  You would first have to make an absolute decision that you want to make this change.  You would have to examine all the habits that have contributed to that which you now want to transform and then build a plan of action.

Thoughts precede feelings and then actions or no actions follow.  That whole sequence leading up to action or no action took millions of neurons wired together to create the body you have now.  You will need to fire up new neuron connections with new thoughts, new feelings about your goal and actions that support it.  Once you’ve stuck with the new plan for a consistent  21 days minimum, new neurons will have wired together making your thoughts, feelings and appropriate actions unconscious.  Reaching for unhealthy food choices will be more difficult once new neuron wiring is in place.  You will feel angst or even anxiety every time you try to deviate from your newly wired neuron connections because they have become unconscious.

Having others around you that support the changes you wish to make helps enormously.  This is also where a coach is very beneficial.

This process is true and works for everything.  No exceptions.  Since there is no limit to the possible neuron connections that can be created, anything is possible.  God puts the dreams in your heart.  You are the one who has to believe in your dreams and yourself and take the actions to create what you want.  The most difficult thing for a human is change because of our limbic system – fight or flight wiring from our cave man ancestors.  It’s there to keep you safe – not stop you.

Intentions and the Domino Effect

Everything happens because you set intentions. After that, it is up to you to follow your guidance and take inspired action – consistently. If you have doubts, fears or other issues that stand in the way of you moving forward, Spirit will work with you so you become the energy of receiving that which you desire. This also applies to your purpose.

If you are thinking the way to get around this is to not set goals or intentions – think again. God is inside you. When you’re happy, God is happy. Your Soul a/k/a you, came here to grow and be more God-like. Since you have free will, you can change your mind and choose differently at any time. However, as long as your intention(s) and purpose remain the same and you keep moving forward, your course is on target.

By the way, even if you change your current intention, another one will take its place, and the whole process starts anew. Along your path you will be called to move beyond your comfort zone and change some habits that no longer serve you. Such is life.

God puts the dreams in your heart. This is what ignites your every cell to say YES! I want that in my life. Or, YES! I want that for the world. However, if it also feels like a stretch, that’s a good thing. Your intuition is your GPS from God and your Soul.

Let’s use the Wright Brothers as an example. They had a dream in their hearts to create a flying machine. Where did that come from? God, of course. It didn’t matter that it was a stretch or that they failed many times. That was the domino effect removing obstacles to the fruition of their dream. They continued to follow their internal GPS, and voila! We now have the airplane. Thank you Wright Brothers for weathering your storms and sticking with your dreams and purpose.

Spirit gives clues and knocks softly to help guide you. This is where your intuition comes in. Spirit communicates with you in ways that only you will understand. You are free to interpret these signs with shadow or light. In your heart, however, you always know the path you are being guided to take. Your task is to muster the courage to take it and keep moving forward.

Here’s an example from my life. I used to be a consultant for a financial-services software corporation. My intuition was hounding me to leave that job and create a business of my own. Having always been in the corporate sector, this was a huge stretch for me. My fear and shadow spoke louder than Spirit’s voice so I ignored that call for two years. Eventually my resistance created a health scare that was loud and very clear. So I finally listened and moved onto the path of my Soul’s purpose for being here.

If you resist your softer guidance, Spirit will begin to knock louder as time goes on. The process from then on is the same. Listen and move forward with faith, courage and gratitude or the knocks may get stronger. However, that doesn’t mean the path will always be paved with rose petals. Life happens no matter what path you choose.

There is no match for having a passion and enthusiasm for life and living that is fueled by a higher source. Fuel to the heart is what I call it. When we let God/Spirit/our Soul IN, the feeling is total ignition, full steam-ahead. How does it get better than that? It’s called living your bliss from the inside out.

Embrace your calling. Only you can know what that means.

Dance with the New – A Dream Interpretation

Do you pay attention to your dreams?

I had a dream the other night just before waking. In the dream, I was watching a young man dance with the energy around him. Pretty soon a young woman appeared in front of him and was dancing with him in the same energy. Then someone on his right, and then many others on his left.

Dream interpretation is a very personal thing. Dreams are a metaphor for aspects of ourselves. They show us what’s going on in our lives combined with what our intuition is trying to tell us.

Many years ago I had requested of my consciousness that dreams I needed to remember be shared right before I awaken. So I always take note of dreams I have just before I wake up.

How I interpret this particular dream may be different than your interpretation of my dream. However, if you receive a gift here on either dream interpretation or something more specific to benefit your life, this story was worth sharing.

Now back to my dream. Since I was watching all of this and not participating in the dance, I was the observer. Could I be observing too much in my life and not participating enough?

The young man represented my male energy; the go-getter, results-oriented, type-A aspect of myself. However, he was going with the flow while still being intuitive enough to notice the subtle signs of the dance. Something I don’t always tend to do under stress or a self-imposed deadline.

The young woman that appeared represented my feminine energy; the receiver of life and birth of the new joining to bring it into form as a dance in life – or achieve results gracefully and joyfully from the heart.

As other people began to appear in the dance, I felt connected to something larger than just the dance I was doing.

Being a very sensitive and intuitive person with a background in the corporate sector, integration of both of these aspects within myself has not always been easy. I sometimes go to one extreme or the other. Hopefully this dream was telling me that I have integrated these aspects energetically and now I just need to go with the flow and follow the signs to bring it into form gracefully.

There could perhaps be an additional message in the dream to manage stress more effectively.

How are you enjoying your dance? Need a little assistance? Feel free to comment, share or contact me.
